TLFG: 27 August - 2 September 2012

I'm keeping this week's blog relatively brief as I'm away from home and not on my own computer. In effect this means you're going to get the essential ticket and fixture information and not the weekly chat about what I've been up to and TLFG's Top 10 - hooray I hear you cry!

The week ahead is particularly busy because of Monday's Bank Holiday which sees most of our local non-league sides in action. Preparing this week's map has been complicated by the weekend's FA Cup ties which have thrown up a few replays and caused a few postponements so hopefully I've got everything right.

After some positive feedback I've continued to include a few youth football matches where the teams are playing at a proper ground (i.e. not a training ground). There are several this week of which Chelsea v Wolves is probably the most notable as it allows you access to Stamford Bridge on a Saturday afternoon for only £5. Further details about this and all games can be found on the match map below.

So without further ado, here's this week's important info:

TLFG: 20-26 August 2012

This time last year QPR fans were licking their wounds after watching their side get routed 4-0 at home by Bolton.

The fact we'd lost after a summer of virtually no investment wasn't a huge shock but getting stuffed by a team who were expected to struggle was very disappointing. Somehow come the end of the season, we just managed to stay up and Bolton went down.

A year on and so much has changed at Loftus Road - new owners have come in and splashed the cash. Since last August almost a whole new squad has been purchased with some decent players brought in.

Only two of the team that started against Bolton began Saturday's season opener against Swansea so big had the changes been.

The signings of Ji-Sung Park, Robert Green, Fabio da Silva, Junior Hoilett, Andy Johnson, Ryan Nelsen and Jose Bosingwa had given many QPR fans the right to believe things might go a little bit better this time but how wrong we were!

The moment the gaffe-prone Green let in a soft goal on eight minutes we knew it could be a tough afternoon.

However, QPR raised their game and should probably have been at least a goal ahead by the time their Welsh opponents next threatened. Sadly the chances weren't taken and the rest is history.

With their side trailing 4-0, three QPR fans consider ending it all
If you haven't seen the result, Swansea added four to their 1-0 half-time lead and romped to a resounding 5-0 win. QPR never came close in the second period, leaving the new Korean fans I saw dotted around the ground looking bemused and probably more than a little embarrassed in their freshly bought replica shirts and caps.

I'm hoping it's just a case of the game coming too soon for all the players to have bedded in properly. It took manager Mark Hughes a while to figure out his best formation after taking over in January and that could well be the problem at the moment.

Next up it's a trip to Norwich who started equally badly albeit away from home. To be talking about a 'six-pointer' just two games in after this summer's investment is a blow but that's football.

I hope your weekend's football watching has been more enjoyable than mine - let us all know where you went and your plans for the week ahead.

Over the next seven days there are more than 80 matches taking place in the London area. Aside from all the usual action, we've also got another big weekend of FA Cup football to look forward to. We've now reached the Preliminary Round and there are ties on Friday, Saturday and Sunday so there's little excuse not to see one. Also this week I've included a couple of Arsenal's games in the Barclays U21 Premier League (a new competition for this season) which provide a great chance to see a game at the Emirates for only £4.

Here's a list of few games that I think could be worth watching in the week ahead:

TLFG TOP 10

CHELSEA v READING (Wednesday 22 August, 745pm)
After beating Bayern Munich to be crowned European champions back in May, this is the first time Blues fans will get to see their side play at Stamford Bridge and I'm sure the club will mark the occasion in some way. Hopefully for them they will have beaten Wigan in their season opener on Sunday and be ready to pick up another three points against newly promoted Reading. Supporters of the Royals will feel relatively satisfied with a point from their first game against Stoke, having staved off defeat with a 90th-minute equaliser. However, Chelsea will be a totally different proposition and the Berkshire club have never beaten them away from home. TICKET INFO

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR v WEST BROMWICH ALBION (Saturday 25 August, 3pm)
This match will be the first under new boss Andre Villas-Boas at White Hart Lane. Spurs narrowly lost 2-1 to a late penalty up at Newcastle on Saturday so they will want to bounce back here. However, the Baggies will be in buoyant mood having comprehensively beaten Liverpool 3-0 in their opening game so should provide a stern test. Last season Tottenham edged the corresponding fixture by a goal to nil and it's likely to be close again here. TICKET INFO

WATFORD v IPSWICH TOWN (Tuesday 21 August, 745pm)
Those who took TLFG's advice and went to see Saturday's game between Crystal Palace and Watford won't have been disappointed as the Hornets left it late to win by the odd goal in five. Next up for the new look Hertfordshire club are Ipswich Town at Vicarage Road. Much is expected of Gianfranco Zola's men this season so it will be interesting to see how they fare against the Tractor Boys who managed to hold former Premier League club Blackburn to a 1-1 draw in their season opener. TICKET INFO

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE v PLYMOUTH ARGYLE (Tuesday 21 August, 745pm)
Last season this was a significant match in the fight to avoid relegation from League Two and after one game of this campaign it looks as though little has changed. The Daggers slipped to a 2-0 reverse at Cheltenham while Argyle suffered the same fate at home to Aldershot. The sides dished up a five-goal thriller the last time they met at Victoria Road so I'm hoping for more of the same. TICKET INFO

DULWICH HAMLET v HYTHE TOWN (Saturday 25 August, 3pm)
This week I'm going to dedicate the non league part of the top 10 to FA Cup ties because there are quite a few good ones around. First up we have these two who both began their Ryman League Division One South campaigns with wins. Dulwich saw off Ramsgate 3-0 while Hythe won 3-1 at Walton Casuals. Having missed out in the play-offs two years running, the hosts will be going all out for the title this time so a morale boostng cup win over one of their rivals should be high on their agenda. TICKET INFO

ROMFORD v WALTHAM FOREST (Friday 24 August, 745pm)
Two east London clubs give you the chance to begin your football watching weekend early when they go toe-to-toe in this FA Cup tie on Friday night. Both play in the Ryman League Division One North and experienced differing fortunes on Saturday with the former winning and the latter losing. Neither side excelled last season either so I expect this game to be close. Before you go steaming off to Romford, please be aware that they are currently playing their home games six or seven miles away at Thurrock's ground. CLUB INFO

NORTH GREENFORD UNITED v DUNSTABLE TOWN (Saturday 25 August, 3pm)
The hosts didn't have a great season last time but did manage to pull away from the foot of the table in the latter stages and avoided relegation fairly comfortably. Dunstable on the other hand play at a level below North Greenford in the Spartan South Midlands League but are currently the best team in it. With three wins out of three so far, they may well fancy their chances of causing a 'cupset' at Berkeley Fields so I recommend you check it out if you're on the west side of town. CLUB INFO

HANWORTH VILLA v ROYSTON TOWN (Saturday 25 August, 3pm)
After thrashing Bethnal Green 5-1 in a replay on Tuesday, Hanworth now face Royston in the next round. The Crows beat Dunstable Town to the Spartan League title last season and began life in the Southern League on Saturday with a 2-0 win at Thatcham Town. Although unbeaten this season and at home, I think Hanworth will come unstuck here but they are a good cup team and should make Royston work hard for the win. CLUB INFO

UXBRIDGE v WEMBLEY (Sunday 26 August, 230pm)
After edging past Langford in the previous round, the Wembley 'Legends' team are next in action against Uxbridge at Honeycroft. Normally you'd expect the higher ranked hosts to win this but the Lions are again expected to field a team including the likes of Ray Parlour, Graeme Le Saux, Brian McBride and Claudio Caniggia thanks to the involvement of a large beer company. A sizeable crowd, for a Combined Counties League team, turned out for their last match and Uxbridge seem to be building up the game in a fairly big way as well. The Sunday afternoon kick-off should ensure a few extra people through the turnstiles too. CLUB INFO

VCD ATHLETIC v WHITSTABLE TOWN (Saturday 25 August, 3pm)
Another Step 5 team to come flying out the blocks this season are VCD Athletic of the Kent League Premier Division. With three wins out of three they look well placed to give the higher ranked Whitstable a good work out. It's still early days but their opening day defeat and lack of home advantage in this all-Kent tie makes the Oystermen look vulnerable. CLUB INFO

TLFG: 13-19 August 2012

Hi there and apologies for the slightly later publishing of this week's blog.

My excuse - a trip to the Olympic Park to watch Sunday's men's handball bronze medal match.

Like a lot of people in this country, it's a sport that's totally new to me but it was very easy to pick up and I enjoyed it a lot.

Croatia were worthy winners against Hungary by 33-26. My only reservation about the sport is that goals are too easy to come by and it gets a bit repetitive - I found myself appreciating the goalkeeper's saves rather than the goals.

My afternoon at the Basketball Arena nearly came to a perfect end when the match ball was thrown into the crowd and just missed my outstretched fingers - what a souvenir that would have been.

Anyway that's enough off topic chat, on Saturday I went to my first football match of the season - Wembley v Langford in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary round.

For those who don't know, the Lions have been sponsored by a large beer company this season. One consequence of this involvement is the drafting in of former international footballers like Ray Parlour, Graeme Le Saux, Brian McBride and Claudio Caniggia to play in their FA Cup ties.

All four started and it was the former Argentina striker who gave the Combined Counties League side a 13th-minute lead with a controlled finish in front of ESPN's live TV audience.

Langford, from a level below Wembley, fought back and levelled soon after the half hour through Ashley Fitton. Sadly for them they fell behind again shortly after when last season's top scorer Daryl Atkins made it 2-1 to the hosts.

It looked all over for the visitors when the impressive Atkins made it 3-1 early in the second half. However, the Spartan South Midlands League club fought back again and cut the deficit almost immediately. They then saw a shot come back off the inside of a post as they came very close to grabbing an equaliser but ultimately it was not to be.

A lot of football fans wanted Wembley to fail miserably because of this parachuting in of players and they may be right to think that. However, taken purely at face value this was a decent game and contained plenty of the action you'd hope to see in an FA Cup tie.

On the Non-League Day front, we're about to send out emails to clubs to try and get them to participate and start thinking about what they might do to try and bring a few extra fans their way.

If you would like to help promote this year's Non-League Day on 13 October then you can download one of our banners to put on your website or blog. Thanks if you do.

So what have you been up to this week? Let us know if you went to one of the Olympic finals, took in a friendly or went to an FA Cup match.

Here's a list of few games that I think could be worth watching in the week ahead:

TLFG TOP 10

ARSENAL v SUNDERLAND (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
The Gunners finished last season as London's top club courtesy of their third place finish in the Premier League. It was quite a turbulent season by the north London club's standards with a rocky patch from November to February seeing some fans calling for Arsene Wenger's head. However, the Frenchman turned things around spectacularly thanks to a run which saw them lose only two of their last 14 games in all competitions. If Arsenal are to be considered among the contenders this season then they'll need to win this opening fixture against the Mackems. TICKET INFO

CRYSTAL PALACE v WATFORD (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
What better way to start the season than with a derby? That's how these two Championship sides will get their league campaigns under way on Saturday. The Hornets suffered a shaky start under rookie manager Sean Dyche last season but he managed to reverse their fortunes and took them into the top half of the table. Sadly this wasn't enough to save his job when the new Italian owners came in over the summer and now former West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola is in charge. His first competitive match was in the League Cup against League Two Wycombe on Saturday and they scraped a 1-0 win after extra time. The Eagles by contrast got off to a decent start last year but faded away and finished in 17th. The pressure to do well on Saturday will be largely on Watford. TICKET INFO

CHARLTON ATHLETIC v LEYTON ORIENT (Tuesday 14 August, 745pm)
You wait all summer for a derby, then two come along at once. Last season this game would have been of greater significance as the two sides were battling for points at opposite ends of League One. They both ultimately got enough to service their immediate ends as Charlton got promoted and the O's avoided the drop. As a result there's now a division between them and this is just a first round League Cup tie. I'd like to think both sides will take it fairly seriously as it's the first game of their respective seasons and a money spinning tie against a Premier League club could lie in wait for the winners. On the ticket front, Charlton have priced all adults tickets at just £10 while U21s and Over 60s get in for £5. TICKET INFO

BOREHAM WOOD v EASTLEIGH (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
The Conference South season begins on Saturday and The Wood see their campaign start with a visit from the bookies' favourites for the title. The Spitfires have signed almost an entirely new squad over the summer with Northern Ireland international Mark Hughes the latest to come in from Barnet. The hosts actually finished above Eastleigh last season in a very creditable eighth place so they'll look to push the Hampshire club here too. CLUB INFO

WELLING UNITED v BATH CITY (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
Elsewhere in the Conference South, Welling will also be looking for a strong start. Having missed out on promotion to rivals Dartford in last season's play-off final, they'll want to try and go up automatically this time. Currently fourth favourites for the title, anything other than a play-off spot will be seen as a failure. Bath at 16-1 for top spot themselves should provide a stern test of their credentials as they look to make an instant return to the Conference Premier which they dropped out of in April. TICKET INFO

WEALDSTONE v METROPOLITAN POLICE (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
Another side fancied to do well this season are Wealdstone of the Ryman Premier. Last season they started slowly but built up an almost unstoppable momentum which took them to the play-offs and an FA Trophy semi-final. Sadly they ran out of steam in both and couldn't quite get over the line against higher ranked clubs. Unbeaten in pre-season, they look very likely to take the points from this opening fixture. Met Police it should be noted are no mugs. Following their promotion, they started last season very strongly before gradually fading into midtable. A similarly solid performance is expected again this term. The Stones are again offering half-price admission of £5 to all adult season-ticket holders from other clubs (other than their opponents) to all their league matches. TICKET INFO

WALTHAM FOREST v GRAYS ATHLETIC (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
The Gravelmen will be openly targeting promotion this season following their run to the Ryman North play-offs last time. With a new ground at Rush Green they'll hoping to make a positive start to this new era. At 6-1 they have been installed as third favourites for the title so their aspirations appear realistic. Waltham Forest on the other hand are still without a ground of their own and are short on funds, if they can take a point from this one they'll have done well. CLUB INFO

DULWICH HAMLET v RAMSGATE (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
Play-off defeat is becoming a common theme here and Dulwich are no exception. When I went to see them play Whitehawk back in April, the title was pretty much theirs for the taking but they lost that game and ended up in the end-of-season shoot out where they lost 1-0 to Bognor Regis. The south London club came unstuck in the play-offs the year before as well to further compound the misery. Consequently they are, like the teams above, one of the favourites for their respective title. Ramsgate should be beaten. TICKET INFO

HANWORTH VILLA v BETHNAL GREEN UNITED (Tuesday 14 August, 730pm)
This FA Cup tie made last week's top 10 too and it appears that it was well chosen. Saturday's encounter produced an entertaining 2-2 draw so the sides from the Combined Counties and Essex Senior Leagues will have to do battle again. It appears Bethnal Green's Mile End Stadium is out of use at the moment so they've had to concede home advantage and will return to Rectory Meadow again for this replay. CLUB INFO

BARKINGSIDE v ENFIELD 1893 (Saturday 18 August, 3pm)
At the time of writing, these two are sitting pretty in second and third place respectively in the Essex Senior League with only Basildon United ahead of them. Both had rather unimpressive results in the FA Cup on Saturday so will attempt to win here and get some momentum going in the league. Enfield won the title the season before last and are usually there or thereabouts so they should start as favourites. TICKET INFO

Sunday 5 August 2012

TLFG: 6-12 August 2012

Well what an opening week it's been for London 2012!

There have been some fantastic highs and disappointing lows already and we're only half way through.

I'm lucky enough to have tickets for the men's bronze medal handball match on the final day but it hasn't stopped me fruitlessly setting up camp on the ticket website trying to get last-minute returns for the really big stuff.

On Saturday I managed to get down to Hyde Park for the closing stages of the women's triathlon which was a great spectacle for the crowds alone, about 10 deep where I was standing on the north side of the Serpentine.

One unintended benefit of the Olympics I've enjoyed is the significant increase in traffic to this blog which has been picked up by numerous searches for 'London 2012 football' and the like - hopefully it's been useful for some.

Non-League Day (NLD) preparations are still going well, particularly when it comes to building partnerships. We're particularly delighted this week to welcome on board legendary Sky Sports commentator and Kingstonian coach Martin Tyler in an ambassadorial capacity. Last year he was good enough to plug NLD during his live coverage of England's win over Bulgaria the night before so we had to get him more fully involved this time.

If you would like to help promote this year's Non-League Day on 13 October then you can download one of our banners to put on your website or blog. Thanks if you do.

So what have you been up to this week? Let us know if you've been to an Olympic event, taken in a friendly or two or went to a season opening game in the Combined Counties League or other Step 5 or 6 competition.

Aside from these there are still tickets for some Olympic football matches at Wembley Stadium and also England's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine at the same venue in September.

Over the next seven days there are over 70 matches taking place in the London area. Aside from the last set of pre-season friendlies, we also welcome the beginning of the Blue Square Bet Premier and Kent Invicta League seasons. However, for a lot of non-league football fans, the highlight of the week must be the start of this season's FA Cup.

Many of our local sides enter the competition at the Extra Preliminary Round stage on Saturday so if you're thinking of doing your own 'Road to Wembley' or emulating A.E. Greb's 'The Long Way' groundhop then now's the time to make some decisions.

So here's this week's match map. Here's a list of few games that I think could be worth watching in the week ahead:

TLFG TOP 10

OLYMPIC FOOTBALL MATCHES (6, 7, 9 and 11 August)
Wembley Stadium plays host to two semi-finals and two finals over the next few days as the men's and women's events reach their climax. Sadly both of Great Britain's sides bowed out at the quarter-final stage so there won't be much home interest. As it stands there are still tickets left for the men's semi between Mexico and Japan on 7 August, while there is also availability for the women's final on 9 August. Tickets for the other two matches may well emerge over the next few days too. TICKET INFO

AFC WIMBLEDON v PORTSMOUTH (Wednesday 8 August, 745pm)
The Dons complete their pre-season with this home match against Pompey. Under normal circumstances this would be a fairly unremarkable occurrence but this year things are very different. If you haven't been following the news, Portsmouth are in grave financial difficulty and at the time of writing only have two senior pros on their books. The remaining two, Liam Lawrence and Tal Ben Haim, need to leave by 10 August or the League One club will fold. Essentially this is the last game the club are set to play in before that date so it could prove to be historic but lets hope not. TICKET INFO

DARTFORD v TAMWORTH (Saturday 11 August, 3pm)
On Saturday the Darts make their long awaited return to the top flight of non-league football. The last time they competed at this level was the 1985/86 season. The intervening time has seen the club struggle financially, reside at several different grounds and play in a number of leagues as they've climbed the pyramid. Now firmly located back in Dartford in their fine Princes Park stadium, they will want to defy the bookies and make sure they stay in the Blue Square Bet Premier. How they fare will depend largely on how they get on against the likes of Tamworth who have also been earmarked to struggle. TICKET INFO

WEMBLEY v LANGFORD (Saturday 11 August, 1245pm)
This is another game that under normal circumstances wouldn't really be that noteworthy. However, this year Wembley kick-off their FA Cup campaign with the backing of a certain large beer company who have brought in a number of big names to assist them. Former England manager Terry Venables has been installed as a technical adviser while David Seaman, Ray Parlour, Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Claudio Caniggia and Brian McBride have all been drafted in as players. Whether this will prove to be a blessing or a curse against Spartan South Midlands League club Langford remains to be seen. The early kick-off should also allow those with a car or bike to take in two games on Saturday with neighbouring clubs Hanwell Town, London Tigers and North Greenford United all kicking off at 3pm. HANWORTH VILLA v BETHNAL GREEN UNITED (Saturday 11 August, 3pm)
It's a case of West v East at Rectory Meadow as two clubs from opposite sides of London meet in this FA Cup match. Hanworth had a fine run in this competition last season reaching the fourth qualifying round, no mean feat for a club playing at Level 9 of the national system. They were also one of the best sides in the Combined Counties League and started their season on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Chessington & Hook. Their opponents this Saturday have been there or thereabouts in the Essex Senior League (also Level 9) over the last year or two, with many fancying them to do well again this season. Although their FA Cup record isn't great, they did make it to the last 16 of the FA Vase last season so I'm hoping for a good cup tie here. CLUB INFO

HAREFIELD UNITED v HILLINGDON BOROUGH (Saturday 11 August, 3pm)
This FA Cup match makes the top 10 this week because it's a derby. The clubs play less than two miles apart and regularly meet in the Spartan South Midlands League. Boro took the honours last season, finishing higher up the table and beating Harefield 5-0 at home while drawing 0-0 away. This game is also the season opener for both sides, further adding to their desire to win. For some reason, Harefield's website has been taken down over the last few days so I can't link anywhere for more official info.

CRAY VALLEY PM v VCD ATHLETIC (Tuesday 7 August, 745pm)
The Kent League season got underway on Saturday and these two were among the early victors. As was mentioned last week, VCD are among those expected to do well this season and their 5-1 thrashing of Beckenham Town underlined that. Cray Valley are playing only their second season at this level and opened their campaign with a creditable 3-2 win at Greenwich Borough. Head down to the 'Badgers' on Tuesday and see which one keeps their 100% record intact. CLUB INFO

EGHAM TOWN v COLLIERS WOOD UNITED (Tuesday 7 August, 745pm)
Egham finished fourth in the Combined Counties League last season and will hope to be among the title challengers again this time. On Saturday they kicked things off with a solid 3-0 win at Sandhurst Town and they will hope for more of the same against Colliers Wood who lost 2-1 at home to Cove. Whether the Sarnies have any realistic shot at winning the league depends on how well Guernsey get on. The club from the Channel Islands took the Division One crown last season and look like sweeping through the Premier Division too following their 8-0 humbling of Croydon on opening day. CLUB INFO

SPELTHORNE SPORTS v FRIMLEY GREEN (Saturday 11 August, 3pm)
As Guernsey dominated Division One, neither of these sides did anything particularly notable as they cruised to midtable finishes. How different it might be this year as the two hammered home 11 goals between them without in reply in their opening fixtures. Those results see them sit third and first respectively at this most early of earlies with Feltham sandwiched in between. If you're not at an FA Cup match on the west side of town come Saturday afternoon, this could be a good alternative. CLUB INFO

KENT FOOTBALL UNITED v WOODSTOCK PARK (Saturday 11 August, 3pm)
The Kent Invicta League season starts on Saturday and of the London based games this is probably the most notable. I've gone for it because it's the first match for KFU. The south-east London club amalgamated with Erith & Dartford Town over the close season and have effectively taken their place in the league, remaining at the same ground (VCD Athletic's). Get down to Crayford on Saturday if you want to be part of a little piece of football history. CLUB INFO
